Banda Besar

Banda Besar is the largest of the islands and the home of Banda's most famous nutmeg plantations as well as well preserved Fort Hollandia (1624) and Fort Concordia (1630). A short boat ride from Neira this lovely island makes for a wonderful day trip to visit an active nutmeg plantation - the oldest in the islands - and the forts. See and even help harvesting nutmegs in the age-old traditional manner. A picnic in the cool shade of 400-year-old nutmeg and almond trees with the strong perfume of spices filling the air is an experience never to be forgotten.
