Pulau Rhun

shells

Pulau Rhun has played several important roles in world history not the least of which was in 1667 when the English traded it with the Dutch for another small island in North America now called Manhattan. They also threw in New Jersey and New York to sweeten the deal. You can visit the remains of Fort Swan (1636) or Fort Defense (1640) on the tiny adjoining island of Nailaka and enjoy superb snorkeling or diving from a beautiful white sand beach. The islands architecture is colonial over laid with the bright pastel colors preferred by the hospitable islanders. Traditionally these islanders have been sailors and traders. The harbor still hosts traditional sailing cargo boats that range as far as Surabaya, and New Guinea.
